Tragic Shooting at Mobile’s Saenger Theatre: Murder Charges Filed

While hundreds of families gathered for a children’s dance recital at Mobile’s historic Saenger Theatre, gunfire erupted at approximately 6:30 p.m. on June 1, 2025, leaving one man dead and another injured.

The victim, identified as 27-year-old Carl Williams III, was pronounced dead at the scene while another individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The shooting occurred following a verbal altercation between Williams and the alleged shooter, Marcus Sanders who fled the venue immediately after the incident.

Mobile Police Department responded within minutes of the first emergency calls, securing the theatre and evacuating attendees. Parents clutched their children as law enforcement officers conducted a thorough sweep of the premises, though the suspect had already left the area.

Witnesses described scenes of panic as the sound of gunshots interrupted the family-oriented performance.

Sanders later turned himself in to authorities at the Mobile Police headquarters, where he was taken into custody without incident. The District Attorney’s office has filed murder charges against Sanders, along with an additional count of first-degree assault for the injury of the second victim. If convicted, Sanders could face life imprisonment under Alabama state law.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Mobile community, particularly among parents who considered the historic Saenger Theatre a safe space for family entertainment. Local officials are now reviewing security protocols at public venues, with several council members calling for improved screening measures and increased police presence at similar events.

“We’re conducting a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances that led to this tragic incident,” stated Mobile Police Chief in a press conference. “Our priority is ensuring the safety of our citizens, especially at family-oriented events where children are present.”

The Saenger Theatre’s management has announced the implementation of new safety measures. These changes will include mandatory bag checks, metal detectors at all entrances, and additional security personnel during events.

The shooting has sparked renewed discussions about public safety in Mobile, with community leaders organizing town hall meetings to address residents’ concerns. Local organizations are also providing counseling services for those who witnessed the incident, particularly children who were performing or attending the recital when the violence erupted.

Further court proceedings against Sanders are scheduled for the coming weeks as the investigation continues into the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
