A grand jury has indicted Joel Cespedes on multiple felony charges, including Attempted Murder and Domestic Violence 2nd Degree – Stalking, following a February shooting incident on Interstate 65.
The incident occurred near the Alabama-Tennessee border when Cespedes allegedly pursued a female victim who refused to stop her vehicle. During the chase, Cespedes fired multiple shots at the woman’s vehicle while she was on an active 911 call seeking assistance. Law enforcement officers responded quickly to the scene after receiving the emergency call.
Investigators from the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office later located Cespedes in the vicinity and found several illegal items in his possession. Among the evidence collected were a firearm, which Cespedes was prohibited from possessing, and multiple fraudulent identification cards that led to further charges.
The grand jury’s indictment includes serious felony charges beyond the attempted murder and stalking counts. Cespedes faces charges of Trafficking in Stolen Identities, highlighting the scope of alleged criminal activities beyond the violent incident.
He’s also been charged with Possession of a Firearm by a Prohibited Person, indicating prior legal restrictions on his right to possess firearms. Furthermore, authorities found him in possession of Fentanyl, leading to a controlled substance charge.
The severity of the charges is reflected in the substantial cash bond set at $2,005,000.00, which Cespedes must post to secure his release before trial. This significant bond amount takes into account both the violent nature of the alleged crimes and the potential flight risk given the multiple serious charges he faces.
The case has drawn attention due to its combination of violent conduct and identity theft charges, suggesting a pattern of criminal behavior that extends beyond the immediate highway shooting incident. Cespedes remains in custody pending his arraignment, which is scheduled for August 6, 2025. At that time, he’ll have the opportunity to enter a plea in response to the multiple charges outlined in the indictment.
